About Rengwa Rengwa (རེ་ངྐཝ་ཉ) is a Turkic language spoken by about 3,000 Rengba (རེང་བ) people in Amdo County, Tibet, around Qiangma. It is thought that the Rengba people originate from Turks from the Uyghur Khaganate captured in the 9th century by the Tibetan Empire who were resettled in the Tibetan plateau. Due to extensive contact with the Classical Tibetan language, Rengwa has had significant Tibetan influence over its phonology and grammar, as well as Buddhist influence over vocabulary. As such Rengwa is has diverged notably from other Turkic languages and is not mutually intelligible. This also makes Rengwa hard for linguists to classify in the Turkic language family.

Because the Rengba have mostly kept to themselves and have lived for hundreds of years in secluded communities, they have not assimilated with the Tibetan people and have remained a distinct ethnic group.
