The Compound Genitive
In PDP, it is possible to have what is called the "compound genitive case"; that is, a word both in the genitive case and a different case at the same time. This occurs because in PDP, nouns in the genitive case are almost treated as adjectives, and so must agree (to an extent) with other nouns they "modify". Here is an example:
Мijмкай оласиг - the mother's house
Пор мijмкай-ки оласигс - in the mother's house
You will notice that in the second sentence, house is in the prepositional while mother is in the genitive, but mother is also taking the suffix particle -ки; this is because mother is modifying house, and so is treated almost like an adjective, requiring that it agree with house. This is what the compound genitive is; any time the noun in the genitive gets modified by another case, you must add the compound genitive suffix. This is usually -ки, but in the case of genitive nesting, this suffix will change.
Genitive Nesting
In PDP, we also have a concept called "genitive nesting", when multiple nouns in the genitive are modifying each other. Here is an example:
My mom's dad's sister
Here, we have mom and dad in the genitive, but they are ultimately relating back to the same thing, this person who is my mom's dad's sister. This is called genitive nesting, and the genitive markers change for each level. They are:
Level | Ending |
1 | -ий |
2 | -ийк |
3 | -їх |
4 | -ёҳ |
Let's build up these levels:
Іљний міјмка - my mom
Іљнийк міјмкай пріпке - my mom's dad
Іљнїх міјмкайк пріпкий мёбрукі - my mom's dad's sister
Іљнёҳ міјмкїх пріпкийк мёбрукјай ҙариса - my mom's dad's sister's child
Compound Genitive Nesting
Technically, it is possible to have both the compound genitive and genitive nesting. The table to describe these endings looks like this:
Level | Simple Ending | Compound Ending |
1 | -ий | -ий-ки |
2 | -ийк | -иха |
3 | -їх | -їҳ |
4 | -ёҳ | -иш |
So, if we wanted to say "I love my mom's dad's sister", we would use both the compound genitive and genitive nesting together. That would translate to:
Шасамы іљнїҳ міјмкайха пріпкий-ки мёбрукіу ✎ Edit Article ✖ Delete Article
